Is Sinus Graft right For Me?

Who Might Consider a Sinus Graft?

A sinus graft may be considered if:

Assessment is made on a case-by-case basis, and treatment options will be discussed with you during your consultation.

What is a Sinus Graft?

A sinus graft involves carefully lifting the sinus membrane and placing bone grafting material beneath it. This helps increase the available bone volume in the upper jaw particularly near the molars and premolars so that it can better support a dental implant.

This type of procedure may be considered if:

  • There may be insufficient height or density in the upper jawbone to support a dental implant securely.
  • The sinus is positioned too close to the jawbone
  • Bone has been lost due to tooth removal, gum disease, or other conditions

The grafted area gradually integrates with your existing bone during the healing phase.

What to Expect During a Sinus Lift Procedure?

1. Consultation and Assessment

We begin with a thorough clinical examination, which may include dental x-rays or 3D imaging to assess bone height and sinus position. This helps us determine if a sinus lift is appropriate and how it would be carried out.

2. Graft Procedure

During the procedure, a small opening is made in the bone near the sinus area. The sinus membrane is gently lifted, and bone graft material is placed beneath it. Local anaesthesia is used to ensure comfort.

3. Healing Phase

The newly placed graft material generally requires a few months to bond and stabilise with the surrounding bone tissue. Once healing is sufficient, implant placement may proceed. In some cases, implants may be placed at the same time as the graft, depending on the amount of existing bone.

Following a sinus graft, it is common to experience:

  • Some patients may notice minor swelling or tenderness around the cheek or gum following the procedure.
  • A sense of pressure or fullness near the sinus
  • Minor bleeding from the nose or mouth

You will be given instructions on how to care for the area during healing. This may include avoiding blowing your nose, sneezing forcefully, or strenuous activity for a period of time.

Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing and determine when implant placement can proceed.

Sinus Lift Surgery to Support Upper Jaw Dental Implants

A sinus lift creates the bone support needed for implants in the upper jaw. It’s a safe, proven procedure that helps improve implant stability and long-term success.

Procedures That May Involve Sinus Grafting

Sinus augmentation is commonly considered as part of treatment planning for:

  • Dental Implants (particularly in the upper premolar and molar regions)
  • Full arch implant-supported restorations
  • Ridge preservation following tooth loss
  • Complex bone grafting procedures

If you are considering dental implants in the upper jaw, your dentist will advise whether a sinus graft is indicated based on imaging and examination.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, and most patients report only mild discomfort during the recovery period. Pain relief and care instructions will be provided.

Healing time can vary between individuals. In most cases, it takes 4 to 6 months before implant placement can proceed. Your dentist will assess the healing at follow-up visits.

Not necessarily. Some patients may have enough bone to proceed without grafting. The need for a sinus lift depends on the height and density of your bone and the position of your sinus.

In rare cases, the graft material may not integrate with the existing bone. If this occurs, your dentist will discuss further options. Most procedures proceed without complication when post-operative instructions are followed.

Sinus lifts do not typically impact breathing. Some patients experience temporary pressure or congestion, but these effects generally resolve during the recovery phase.

Yes. All materials used are regulated for dental use, sterile, and approved for bone grafting procedures.

In certain cases, yes. This depends on the amount of bone already present. Your dentist will determine this during your assessment.
